MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th May, 2019) NATO's experts have adopted a new military strategy in relation to the Russian "threat," the alliance's Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.
"This week, our military experts adopted a new military strategy for the alliance," Stoltenberg said.
The secretary general noted that since 2014, "a new security situation" and new challenges emerged in the south and in the east. Moreover, Stoltenberg argued that Russia has been using "nuclear threat" against the West more often.
"This concerns full readiness for defense and ability to ensure stability in the future. This partially requires a new military concept," Stoltenberg explained.
The secretary general added that NATO was able to adapt when it was necessary.
Earlier this week, NATO members met in Brussels for the 181st Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session.
The meeting was focused on the alliance's new military strategy.
Russian-NATO relations have significantly deteriorated in light of the Ukrainian conflict, with the bloc having accused Russia of meddling in its neighbor's internal affairs, which Russia repeatedly denied. Moscow has said that NATO has been using its alleged interference in the Ukrainian crisis as a pretext for boosting its military presence in Eastern Europe.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly expressed concerns over NATO's activities on the borders with Russia, stressing that they posed real threats to Russia's security and violated the NATO-Russia Founding Act, which banned the deployment of significant fighting forces on the territories of new member states.
