WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 23rd January, 2019) Almost three-quarters of Democratic voters would consider voting for first-time US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for president despite the fact she is around six years under the age requirement of 35, a new online poll revealed on Tuesday.
The new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll showed that 74 percent of Democrats and those who lean Democratic would consider voting for the 29-year-old congresswoman from New York, including 17 percent who would "definitely" vote for her.
Ocasio-Cortez, who describes herself as a "Democratic Socialist" tops Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in favorability among Democrats, and nearly rivals House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to the poll results.
Ocasio-Cortez ousted a veteran Democratic in the mid-term primaries to capture the House seat. Since taking office in January she has made several controversial remarks that have been criticized by some more moderate members of her party.
The daughter of now deceased Republican Senator John McCain recently accused Ocasio-Cortez of being "just like Trump on Twitter," and that Democrats should condemn her for it. Ocasio-Cortez already has more than 2.4 million Twitter followers, more than the 63 other freshman lawmakers combined, according to The Hill.
According to the US Constitution a presidential candidate must be a natural born citizen of the United States, a resident for 14 years, and 35 years of age or older.
