MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th March, 2019) New Zealand's cabinet will make an announcement on changes to the country's firearms regulations by March 25, which will mark 10 days since the deadly mosque massacre in Chirstchurch, the country's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said on Monday.
Ardern pledged to change New Zealand's gun laws shortly after the violent attacks on two mosques, in which 50 people were killed and dozens badly injured. The suspected attacker, who now faces murder charges, had a gun license.
"This ultimately means that within 10 days of this horrific act of terrorism we will have announced reforms which I believe will make our community safe .
.. There's simply details to work through," Ardern said, as quoted by 1TVNZ broadcaster.
She stressed that the cabinet was "absolutely unified" on this decision.
While an agreement on changes "in principle" was reached just 72 hours after the attack, time will be needed to finalize it, according to Ardern.
The suspected shooter, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian national, will remain in custody until April 5. Tarrant explained his motives by his anti-Muslim and anti-migrant views in a manifesto published before the attack.
