MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) Public support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) has dropped to the record low of 28 percent, while the right-wing Eurosceptic Alternative for Germany party (AfD) is second in the ratings with 18 percent, coming ahead of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) for the first time, a fresh poll revealed on Friday.
According to the Infratest dimap poll conducted for the ARD broadcaster, the SPD was supported by 17 percent of respondents.
The Greens received 15 percent of popular support, the Left received 10 percent and the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) received 9 percent.
The current poll also showed a dramatic fall in public support for Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU), with only 28 percent praising his work and 59 percent believing that he was not a good fit for the job.
Public support for the CDU/CSU is now the lowest compared to all Infratest dimap polls since the first one, published in November 1997.
The poll was conducted on September 17-19 with 1,035 people having participated in it.
