The heart and thoughts of famous Russian novelist Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn were filled with both love and pain for his country, and these feelings pervaded the whole of his writings, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday, marking the centenary of Solzhenitsyn's birth.
"I remember very well all our meetings with Aleksandr Isayevich, his wisdom, reasonableness and a deep understanding of history. His heart, soul and thoughts were full of pain and love for his fatherland at the same time.
These feelings were the driving force of his creative work," Putin said at the opening of a monument to Solzhenitsyn in central Moscow.
The Russian president stressed that Solzhenitsyn clearly saw the division between the "true Russia" and its people, and the totalitarian system, which "brought suffering and hardship to millions of people."
Solzhenitsyn is the author of the world-famous book "The Gulag Archipelago," which was first published in 1973.
