MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) Refugees living in the Rukban camp, located in the US-controlled zone in Syria's At-Tanf, suffer from acute shortage of water, since a resident of the camp is unable to receive more than 5 liters (1.3 gallons) of water daily, the joint Russia-Syria coordination center on refugee repatriation said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Despite Jordanians' efforts, there is a critical lack of water in the camp ... Simple arithmetic shows that every resident of the camp can receive no more than five liters of water per day. This is barely enough for drinking and doing the dishes, while it is not enough for washing oneself and clothes, which results in unhygienic conditions," the statement read.
The center specified that only neighboring Jordan could currently provide the refugees with water.
"The satellite image shows clearly how the supply of water to the residents is organized. Behind the wall of the camp, there are 210-cubic-meter [7,416-cubic-feet]-cisterns, where water, transported from Jordanian territory, is poured, while inside the camp there are points where residents can collect the water," the statement added.
The center said that sometimes people living in the camp failed to obtain even 5 liters since US-controlled militants hindered the delivery of water, using it as a tool for blackmail.
The camp is believed to host around 40,000 refugees, who not only reside in unsanitary conditions but also face spreading diseases and violence. The center has repeatedly slammed Washington for preventing refugees from leaving the site.
