A second victim died on Wednesday after a vintage plane crashed shortly after take-off on a test flight from a small airport in the South African capital Pretoria, aviation authorities said.

The Convair-340 plane built in 1954 came down on rough ground about five kilometres (three miles) east of the airport on Tuesday, hitting a small factory building.

One person who was in the plane died at the scene, while a second person who was on ground died on Wednesday.

"We can confirm that a second person has unfortunately died. This was one of the people injured on the ground," South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) spokesman Kabelo Ledwaba told AFP.

Several of the three crew and 16 passengers were injured, as well as two other people on the ground.

Images from the site showed the plane broken into several pieces but the cause of the crash remained unknown.

The plane was on a test flight before it was due to be flown to the Aviodrome air museum in the Netherlands from the Wonderboom airport in Pretoria via stops in east Africa, Egypt, Croatia and Austria.

The SACAA said it would produce a report within 30 days on the crash.
