The Serbian parliament has voted to increase imprisonment for especially serious crimes to life sentence, national television reported Tuesday

BELGRADE (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) The Serbian parliament has voted to increase imprisonment for especially serious crimes to life sentence, national television reported Tuesday.

The bill amending and modifying the country's Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code was adopted by 159 votes out of 250.

It increases the maximum imprisonment for severe or multiple crimes, including the rape or murder of minor, elderly, pregnant or disabled persons, from 40 years to life sentence.

It was proposed by Igor Juric, the founder of the "Tijana Juric" foundation, whose 15-year-old daughter Tijana was abducted and killed in 2014. His campaign for the bill collected 158,460 signatures.

In January, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic spoke of the intention to introduce life sentence for especially serious crimes following a session of the National Security Council.
