Sri Lanka Prime Minister Resigns After Failing to Appeal Court's Ban From Office - Reports

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has stepped down, signing the relevant document, the News First broadcaster reported on Saturday

NEW DELHI (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 15th December, 2018) Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has stepped down, signing the relevant document, the news First broadcaster reported on Saturday.

Earlier in December, a Sri Lankan court of appeal banned Rajapaksa and his government from office. The politician appealed the court decision.

On Thursday, the country's Supreme Court ruled that Rajapaksa had no right to serve as prime minister.

Rajapaksa, a former president, took office in October after President Maithripala Sirisena removed then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe from power. After the parliament did not support Rajapaksa, Sirisena dissolved it on November 9 and announced the next elections to be held on January 5, 2019.

The Supreme Court declared the decision to dissolve the parliament unconstitutional.
