MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) Damascus is prepared to ensure the safety and security of six humanitarian convoys evacuating refugees from the Rukban camp in Syria, according to a statement by the joint Russia-Syria coordination center on refugee repatriation, published on Wednesday.
"The Syrian government is ready to provide reliable protection and defense for six humanitarian car convoys through the Syrian Arab Republic's security forces cooperating with military police units of the Russian Armed Forces," the statement read.
According to the statement, the US At-Tanf base, located near Rukban, does not have the ability to ensure the safety of the camp's inhabitants, who want to return home.
The sides called on the United States to "support the initiative and appoint its representatives to escort the convoys," as well as put pressure on armed groups that are under its control "to ensure unhindered access to the Rukban camp," the statement said.
Earlier this month, Russia and Syria called on the United States to disband the camp, which is situated the US-controlled zone near At-Tanf base in Syria.
In January, the World Health Organization described people residing in the camp as "trapped," adding that they live "in deplorable conditions."
