The General Staff of the Syrian Army announced in a statement on Monday the completion of a military operation on the Safa plateau, the last stronghold of militants of the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) in the south of the country.
"The General Staff announces that after a pinpoint operation, the Syrian army has established full control over the Safa plateau region ... destroying the IS militants entrenched there with a large number of medium- and large-caliber weapons," the statement, obtained by Sputnik, said.
"The importance of this victory is in the fact that it was the last stronghold of the Islamic State in the Syrian desert in the south of the country, a territory of 380 square kilometers [some 147 sq. miles] has been liberated," according to the statement.
