WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th September, 2018) US President Donald Trump abandoned long-held American values such as international leadership, peace and security during his speech at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, advocacy group Human Rights First said in a press release.
"The values that President Trump described today in his speech would be unrecognizable to those Americans who helped establish the United Nations to ensure international peace and security in the wake of World War II," Rob Berschinski, Human Rights First's Senior Vice President for Policy, said in the release. "Trump's overly simplistic and distorted view of 'sovereignty' will be music to the ears of authoritarian leaders from Moscow to Beijing.
"
Berschinski said Trump's attacks on the UN Human Rights Council and International Criminal Court showed that the US is no longer in the business of improving flawed international bodies. He added that the president's rejection of the Global Compact on Migration is yet another indication that this administration will not lead internationally.
"What the president of the United States presented to the world this morning wasn't so much an articulation of American values as a rejection of what has made this country both great and good," Berschinski said.
In his 35-mintue speech at the UNGA, Trump address several issues, ranging from international trade and conflicts to human rights.
