UK Conservative Lawmaker Estimates 48 Letters Needed for No Confidence Vote in May Sent In

UK Conservative lawmaker Steve Baker told reporters on Friday he believed that 48 letters required to launch a no confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May had been sent to the Conservatives' 1922 Committee in the House of Commons.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th November, 2018) UK Conservative lawmaker Steve Baker told reporters on Friday he believed that 48 letters required to launch a no confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May had been sent to the Conservatives' 1922 Committee in the House of Commons.

A number of Conservative lawmakers have already said they sent the letters in response to the draft Brexit deal backed by May's Cabinet on Wednesday.

"My count is something over 48, with possibly a dozen more probables," Baker said, as seen in a video posted by the Sky news broadcaster.

The lawmaker stressed that only Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee, would know the exact number of the letters.

A no confidence vote can be triggered if 15 percent of the Conservative lawmakers write to the 1922 committee chairman requesting it. If the committee receives the required 48 letters and decides to proceed with the vote, May will need to win a simple majority to retain her office. If she wins, the party cannot call for another no confidence vote for a year.
