UK House of Commons Speaker Says No Request Received for Trump to Address Parliament

The UK parliament has not received a formal request for US President Donald Trump to address the legislative body during his trip to the United Kingdom next week, House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 28th May, 2019) The UK parliament has not received a formal request for US President Donald Trump to address the legislative body during his trip to the United Kingdom next week, House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said on Tuesday.

"No request has been received by me for President Trump to address a gathering of both Houses of Parliament in Westminster," Bercow said during an event at the Brookings Institution in Washington. "No request has been received in relation to the current trip."

Trump is expected to visit the United Kingdom from June 3 to June 5 where he will be hosted by the Queen and is set to meet outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May.

On Friday, May announced that she would resign as the leader of the Conservative Party on June 7. She added that she would always regret her failure to deliver Brexit.

In February 2017, Bercow ruled out the possibility of Trump addressing the House of Commons, citing the president's migrant ban as well as for opposition to racism and sexism.

Bercow said speaking to the House of Commons is an honor that has to be earned rather than being a default event.
