WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 08th December, 2018) New UN special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen should start his work on solving the ongoing conflict in the country from the point where outgoing envoy Staffan de Mistura finishes but in a new groundbreaking way, a current member of the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) and a member of the Political committee of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (SOC) told Sputnik.
"I think he should start where De Mistura has finished but in a new innovative way to create really an active and effective political process momentum," Hadi al-Bahra said on Friday. "I think he is a wise man. He has a lot experience in the middle East.
"
On October 31, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that he had appointed the Norwegian diplomat to serve as his Special Envoy for Syria, replacing outgoing envoy de Mistura.
Pedersen has significant diplomatic experience, including serving as Norway's Representative to the Palestinian Authority from 1998 to 2003, as ambassador to the United Nations from 2012 to 2017 and ambassador to China since.
At the United Nations, Pedersen served in various roles, including as Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for Southern Lebanon and as Director of the Asia and Pacific Division in the Department of Political Affairs.
