Young people should play the leading role in combating violent extremism and be more engaged in creating and implementing anti-extremism policies, the UN Development Program (UNDP) said in a fresh report
The report titled "Frontlines: Young people at the forefront of preventing and responding to violent extremism" was compiled by UNDP in cooperation with the Oslo Governance Center and with support of the Norwegian government.
"If the object of policy and programming is ultimately to design and support effective approaches to prevent violent extremism while upholding human rights standards, then it is vital that we better understand and nurture youth-led action on the ground .
.. Young people have a central role to play in PVE [Preventing Violent Extremism]. They should be valued, promoted and supported as allies and partners for change," UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner said in a foreword to the report.
The report, based on global surveys, series of interviews with the youth and case studies, calls for boosting investments in ensuring participation of young people all over the world in decision-making process and implementation of anti-extremism policies.
According to the report, the level of young people's awareness of violent extremism and engagement in various initiatives in the field has increased and it could be turned into significant influence on anti-extremist policies.
