MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 05th June, 2019) European Council President Donald Tusk said Wednesday that he and recently sworn-in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to hold the EU-Ukraine summit as planned, in July.
The summit is expected to take place in Kiev on July 8.
"President Zelenskyy and I discussed our next EU-Ukraine summit. This will set the priorities for our relations in the year ahead. Our joint decision is to hold the summit as planned and we have also agreed to remain in close contact," Tusk said after talks with Zelenskyy.
Tusk added that the European Union was prepared to help Ukraine stabilize its economy and "pursue energy sector reforms."
"The fact that you are visiting the capital of the European Union and the headquarters of NATO on your first foreign trip is a strong and important signal," Tusk said.
Zelenskyy assumed office on May 20 after winning the presidential runoff against his predecessor Petro Poroshenko with 62 percent of the vote.
Ukraine and the European Union signed an association agreement in 2017.
