WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th April, 2019) US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Kimberly Breier will visit two of three Central American nations responsible for waves of migrant caravans seeking asylum in the United States, the Department of State announced in a press release on Friday.
"Breier's April 21 stop in Honduras includes a meeting with President Juan Orlando Hernandez," the release stated.
While in El Salvador on April 21, Breier will meet with senior government officials and visit Salvadoran government projects promoting employment and anti-gang efforts, the release said.
However, the Primary purpose of Breier's visit is to urge the governments of both nations "to do more to prevent illegal immigration to the United States," the release said.
US officials expect more than 1 million migrants to request political asylum at or after illegally crossing the southwestern US border with Mexico, mainly from El Salvador and Honduras as well as from Mexico.
