WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th September, 2018) The United States should come up with a new plan to eliminate terrorist groups because it cannot remedy the problem by solely using military force, former 9/11 Commission leaders, Thomas H. Kean and Lee H. Hamilton, wrote in an opinion-editorial text on Tuesday.
"Our military has been effective, but we cannot curb extremism through force alone," Kean and Hamilton wrote in the text published by USA Today. "The United States needs a new strategy to mitigate the conditions that enable extremist groups to take root, spread and thrive."
Kean and Hamilton said that since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, terrorists have found new ways to migrate and establish a strong position in two dozen countries in the middle East and North Africa and elsewhere.
The growth and spread of terrorist-related activities has resulted in five times more terror attacks worldwide in 2017, the two commissioners noted.
Kean and Hamilton also warned that terrorism will keep expanding because radical group now not only recruit in their home countries, but also promote domestic terrorism in other states.
"We cannot wait for terrorists to strike again. We must act now or suffer later," Kean and Hamilton said in their call for enforcement of preventive measures.
The text was published on the 17th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in which nearly 3,000 were killed. On that date, the al-Qaeda terrorist group (outlawed in Russia) hijacked and crashed two commercial airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York City and one into the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Another hijacked airplane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
