CARACAS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza met on Wednesday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who, according to the minister, showed understanding of the situation in Venezuela.

"[I had] an extraordinary meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He has a lot of understanding about the main issues concerning Venezuela, our region and protecting global multilateralism and diplomacy," Arreaza tweeted.�

Arreaza was accompanied by Samuel Moncada, the Venezuelan permanent representative to the United Nations, at the meeting that took place in New York.

In January, US-backed Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido illegally declared himself interim president in a bid to dispute the legitimacy of President Nicolas Maduro's re-election in May. Washington immediately endorsed Guaido and called on Maduro to step down.

Maduro has accused the United States of trying to orchestrate a coup in order to install Guaido as a US puppet. Russia, China and a number of other countries have voiced their support for Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
