CARACAS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Venezuela's parliament will be fighting to bring the country back to the democratic path, member of the opposition-run National Assembly Jorge Millan told Sputnik.
"The National Assembly is fighting for the country to restore its democratic path, model and political system, which could provide guarantees to the people," Millan said.
According to the lawmaker, Juan Guaido, who declared himself Venezuela's interim president on Wednesday, did it in accordance with the Article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution amid the "usurpation" of power by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Millan called on the international community to recognize Guaido as Venezuela's interim president, stressing that his goal was to hold transparent elections in the Latin American country.
On Wednesday, Guaido declared himself the country's interim president at a mass rally in Caracas. The United States urged Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down in favor of Guaido. Maduro called the opposition leader "the US puppet" and said that Venezuela was severing diplomatic ties with Washington.
