"We expected to achieve about seven million work hours without accidents by the end of the project," Fahad Al Awadhi, Director of Sewage and Irrigation Department of DM, said.

He also pointed out that, "So far we have completed 70 percent of work in this project that employees more than 1,900 engineers, technicians and workers."

He said that the consultant of the project observed that the health and safety procedures, set by DM, and abided by all construction companies working in the project, have succeeded in preserving human wealth and equipment that worth hundreds of millions.

The project is aimed at adding 375,000 cubic metres per day capacity to increase the capacity of existing treatment plant to 675,000 cubic metres per day by the end of this phase, he said.

Al Awadhi pointed out that the project consists of two main tracks, the process of liquid waste treatment and the process of solid waste treatment and contains a plant for the production of organic fertilizer from solid waste, which is sold to the public.

He also said that the treated water will be pumped again through a pipeline network covering the entire area of the Emirate of Dubai for use in irrigation of public parks and part of it will be sold to developers and farm owners, adding the economic value of the project.

"One of the products of the treatment process is methane, which is planned to be used in the production of electricity, thus saving energy consumption from the public network, which is in line with the emirate’s strategy of sustainable development," concluded Al Awadhi.
