ESMA to develop methods of measuring radiation, chemicals, emissions, air quality

DUBAI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 20th May, 2019) The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology, ESMA, announced its plan to develop methods of measuring radiation, chemicals, emissions and air quality, as well as to promote the role of the National Institute of Measurement and other scientific research centres.

ESMA officials made the announcement today during its celebration of World Metrology Day, which was attended by representatives of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, BIPM, the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, the National Institute of Measurement, UAE University, and a number of companies and local departments.

On the sidelines of the celebration, Abdullah Al Maeeny, Director-General of ESMA, said that this year’s event coincides with a vote held in France last year approving the UAE’s launch of new definitions of four of the seven basic measurement units in the international system of units.

Dr. Hilal Humaid Al Kaabi, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, expressed his pleasure at participating in the event, noting that the government is aware of the role of metrology in supporting many national industrial and commercial sectors, as well as the importance of having an advanced metrology infrastructure to keep pace with international developments that will reinforce the country’s economic growth and raise the competitiveness of Emirati products in regional and international markets.

He added that the UAE has developed quality and measurement standards in all sectors through the expertise of the Emirates Metrology Institute, which has one of the ten best energy laboratories in the world.

Eng. Amina Zainal, Director of the Standardisation Administration at ESMA, stated that ESMA aims to create partnerships with the country’s public and private sectors through signing cooperation agreements in legal and scientific standardisation programmes.

She added that the authority is currently launching programmes related to standardising jewellery measurements, commercial measurements, fuel and taxi metres, and medical measurement tools.

The world celebrates the annual World Metrology Day on 20th May, which is the date of the signing of the International Metre Treaty in Paris in 1875.
