UAE wins chairmanship of UNWTO Commission for the Middle East

The Emirati candidate, Mohammed Khamis bin Hareb Al Muhairi, Ministry Under-Secretary and Advisor to the Minister of Economy for Tourism Affairs, won, for the second consecutive year, the chairmanship of the World Trade Organisation, UNWTO, Commission for the Middle East, for its new 2020-2021 term

CAIRO, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 25th Mar, 2019) – The Emirati candidate, Mohammed Khamis bin Hareb Al Muhairi, Ministry Under-Secretary and Advisor to the Minister of Economy for Tourism Affairs, won, for the second consecutive year, the chairmanship of the World Trade Organisation, UNWTO, Commission for the middle East, for its new 2020-2021 term.

His chairmanship was announced during the meetings of the 45th edition of the commission that was held in Cairo, chaired by Al Muhairi and attended by tourism ministers and officials from the Middle East, as well as a high-level delegation from the UNWTO, led by Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the UNWTO.

During the meeting, the UAE gained the support of all the region’s countries.

In his statement, Al Muhairi renewed his invitation to the region’s countries to work together to achieve development and sustainability, by drawing a relevant road map and adopting a joint strategic vision for the tourism sector, which will support the organisation’s member states, strengthen their economies, encourage the exchange of best practices and expertise, and provide technical support related to the tourism sector.

He also invited the UNWTO to continue supporting the Middle East and launching initiatives, projects and activities that will encourage the growth of the tourism sector, which is rapidly evolving, in light of the advancement of the services, technology and artificial intelligence sectors.

He also pointed out that the UNWTO realised this new direction and called on all its member states to begin adopting plans, programmes and strategies that will support this transformation and guarantee the sector’s sustainability.

The members of the commission called on the UNWTO to continue supporting the digital transformation of the tourism sector, to keep pace with the latest developments.
