LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Oct, 2025) The recent rains and floods in the rivers have caused severe damage to fish farms in Punjab, which is severely affecting fish production in the province.
According to the Punjab Fisheries Department sources, Kasur, Hafizabad Mandi Bahauddin and Muzaffargarh are the districts where dozens of fish farms were completely or partially destroyed. The high flow swept millions of fish into the open water and destroyed ponds, earthen pond boundaries and other structures built by farmers. According to initial estimates, the damage has reached crores of rupees.
Lahore Fish Market President Chaudhry islam told APP that large quantities of fish were brought to Lahore from southern and central Punjab every day, but due to the floods, production has decreased by about 40 percent.
According to him, prices will increase sharply due to reduced supply and fish prices may increase by 30 to 40 percent in the coming days. Punjab Fisheries Director General Rana Saleem Afzal said that all affected districts have been instructed to prepare detailed reports on the damage caused to fish and shrimp farms.
According to the Fish Farmers Association, has urged the government to take immediate steps, otherwise thousands of farmers will go bankrupt, adding there could also be a severe shortage of food, that is a major and relatively cheap source of protein in the country.
