MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who was stabbed with a knife during the pre-election event on Thursday, received liver injury, local media reported.
The politician underwent surgery, the Globo portal reported.
Initially, a superficial wound was reported, but then there was evidence of a more serious injury. According to the Folha de Sao Paulo news portal, Bolsonaro lost a lot of blood.
According to Bolsonaro's son, his father was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but his condition has stabilized since.
After former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was banned from the presidential election scheduled for October, it is Bolsonaro who is considered to be the main contender.
Brazilian president Michel Temer said the attack on Bolsonaro was a problem for democracy and wished the politician speedy recovery.
Bolsonaro was attacked in the city of Juiz de Fora in southeast of Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. The surgery in a local hospital lasted about two hours, the politician's condition remains serious but stable.
Bolsonaro's campaign is under threat as he will have to spend between seven and 10 days in the hospital, followed by a recovery period, the Folha outlet reported, citing surgeon Glaucio Souza.
The politician may require another surgery, the medic reportedly said. Meanwhile, the election will be held on October 7.
A suspect, Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, 40, was detained at the scene of the crime. He explained his actions by his ideological disagreement with the candidate. The police of Minas Gerais reportedly said they had a second suspect, although his identity has not been disclosed yet.
