AU Peace, Security Focus in DRC to Shift to Tackling Violence in Country's East - Chergui

The African Union will now adjust its focus to address the violence in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), African Union's Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui said during a press briefing at the 32nd AU summit on Monday

ADDIS ABABA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th February, 2019) The African Union will now adjust its focus to address the violence in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), African Union's Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui said during a press briefing at the 32nd AU summit on Monday.

"We indeed received His Excellency President [Felix] Tshisekedi of the DRC, who also addressed yesterday the summit and expressed his willingness to work with all of us on many issues and mainly we are thinking now to try together to address issues of insecurity, violence and all these negative forces in the east of DRC. That should be normally our next focus," Chergui said.

The DRC has suffered from violent conflict for more than two decades. Even though the Second Congo War, also known as the Great African War, ended in 2003, Eastern Congo has remained destabilized as various rebel groups are still operating in the area.
