Fessenheim Nuclear Plant Units in France Expected to Be Retired in 2020, 2022 - Watchdog

One unit at the nuclear power plant in the French commune of Fessenheim is expected to go out of service in September 2020, while the other one is likely to be shut down in August 2022, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) said Monday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd October, 2018) One unit at the nuclear power plant in the French commune of Fessenheim is expected to go out of service in September 2020, while the other one is likely to be shut down in August 2022, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) said Monday.

"[The plant operator] EDF does not expect the reactors of the plant to function beyond their fourth regular re-examinations, scheduled in September 2020 for Reactor 1 and in August 2022 for Reactor 2," the ASN said in a press release.

According to the ASN, the used fuel will be stored in a special pool of each of the reactors for several years after they have been shut down. Afterward, the fuel will be transported to the recycling site in La Hague in Normandy.

The nuclear safety authority added that it had notified EDF about the need to send the declaration on the complete shutdown of the reactors to the ASN and the French government. The report on the risks linked to the dismantlement of the units should be submitted by September 2020.
