New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Friday declared a state of emergency due to the record number of illegal immigrants that the city will find difficult to accommodate
WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th October, 2022) New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Friday declared a state of emergency due to the record number of illegal immigrants that the city will find difficult to accommodate.
"I am declaring a state of emergency in the City of New York and issuing an executive order. This executive order will formally direct all relevant agencies to coordinate their efforts to construct the humanitarian relief centers. We are also suspending certain land use requirements to expedite this process," Adams said in a statement.
Adams criticized the lack of cooperation with US southern states from where the illegal immigrants are coming to New York that has led to more people arriving than can immediately accommodated, the statement said.
"Once the asylum seekers from today's buses are provided shelter, we will surpass the highest number of people in recorded history in our city's shelter system.
And every day going forward that we add more to this count, we break another record," Adams said in the statement.
The city's shelter system accounts more than 60,000 people, some for whom accommodate the local homeless, but thousands of them are asylum seekers, the mayor said. The local shelter system is currently accommodating 17,500 asylum seekers.
Adams urged Federal and state authorities to provide additional support to New York in order to resolve the situation.
The executive order directs local agencies to coordinate efforts to establish and operate temporary humanitarian relief centers that will provide full assistance for arriving asylum seekers and direct referrals to alternative emergency support sources.
Adams said the state of emergency will remain in effect for 30 days and may be extended.
