LIMA, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -19th Sept,2016) - Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who is serving a 25-year prison term for corruption and human rights violations, has been hospitalized, officials said Monday, the latest in a series of health crises.
Fujimori, 78, was transferred Sunday night from prison to a clinic with gastric problems and pain on his tongue, where he has had a recurring cancerous growth, said the national prison service.
Doctors found he had bleeding and lesions in his digestive tract, said his attending physician, Alejandro Aguinaga. The lesions "appear benign, but we have done a biopsy as a precaution," he said.
Fujimori, who is remembered for ruling Peru with a populist style and authoritarian grip from 1990 to 2000, has been in and out of the hospital in recent months. He had cataract surgery last November after complaining of blurred vision while writing his memoirs.
He has also undergone five operations for the lesion on his tongue. Fujimori, who also holds Japanese citizenship, was first jailed in 2007 and convicted in 2009 for his role in killings by a death squad targeting supposed members of the Shining Path guerrilla group in the 1990s.
