Russia has put forward its candidacy for membership in the UN Human Rights Council for 2021-2023, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said Monday
GENEVA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) Russia has put forward its candidacy for membership in the UN Human Rights Council for 2021-2023, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said Monday.
"The Russian Federation put forward its candidacy in the elections to the HRC for 2021-2023. If elected to the council, we will make every effort to ensure that this body works on an impartial, objective and non-politicized basis, becomes a platform for real constructive cooperation of all stakeholders, and acts impartially on the basis of the broadest possible consensus," Vershinin said, speaking at the opening of the 40th HRC session in Geneva.
In October, the General Assembly elected 18 States - Argentina, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Czechia, Denmark, Eritrea, Fiji, India, Italy, Philippines, Somalia, Togo, and Uruguay - to the Human Rights Council for three-year terms.
The 40th session of the Human Rights Council, an inter-governmental body within the UN system comprised of 47 states, will run through March 22.
