Seoul, Moscow Seek Ways to Revive Khasan-Rajin Railway Project - Ambassador

South Korea and Russia are looking for ways to resume cooperation within the framework of the Khasan-Rajin railway project, Seoul's ambassador in Moscow, Woo Yoon-keun, said Tuesday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) South Korea and Russia are looking for ways to resume cooperation within the framework of the Khasan-Rajin railway project, Seoul's ambassador in Moscow, Woo Yoon-keun, said Tuesday.

"As for the Rajin-Hassan project, the search for developing ways to resume it is ongoing, including joint surveys with the Russian side, focused on ways to improve the economic efficiency of the project," the ambassador told reporters.

Woo expressed hope that survey results would be positive and trilateral projects would be fully implemented.

In July, South Korean authorities announced that an old project of the Khasan-Rajin railway that would deliver cargo from Russia to the North Korean city of Rajin, so that it could then be shipped to South Korea by sea, would be resumed. The project was initiated back in 2000, but work on its implementation started only in 2008 and was suspended in 2016 as South Korea quit the project due to its concerns over Pyongyang's nuclear tests.
