TOKYO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) Japan hopes that the meeting of South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will result in specific steps toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Moon arrived in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang to hold talks with Kim on a number of issues, including enhancing of bilateral ties and denuclearization.
"It is important that the commitments that North Korea and the United States have agreed on, including North Korea's pledges of [making effort toward] complete denuclearization, are implemented.
We hope that the South-North Korea summit will result in specific steps," Suga said.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has significantly improved over the past few months, with Kim and Moon having held two bilateral meetings in April and May, and Kim having reached agreement with US President Donald Trump in June that North Korea would make efforts to promote complete denuclearization of the peninsula in exchange for US-South Korean military drills' freeze and a potential removal of US sanctions.
