Gov’t assures protection of farmer interests: Rana Tanveer

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Jul, 2025) Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain on Monday said that the government’s sugar export decision was aimed at protecting farmers and ensuring national food security.

Talking to a private news channel, he said that Pakistan had a surplus of 1.4 million tons of sugar at the time of export.

Timely export was necessary to stabilize the market and prevent losses to sugarcane growers, he added.

The minister clarified that if sugar was not exported, farmers would suffer due to a price crash and lack of buyers.

Rana Tanveer said sugar will only be exported next year if production crosses 7 million tons and local need stays around 6.3 million tons.

He said the government is working closely with sugar mills to ensure a balanced approach that supports both the industry and the farming community.

He assured that all future decisions will be made in the best interest of the public and the agriculture sector.
