Russian Football Players Mamaev, Kokorin May Face Up to 5 Years in Jail -Interior Ministry

Moscow police opened on Wednesday criminal proceedings against football players Pavel Mamaev and Alexander Kokorin over a brawl incident under Article 231 of the Criminal Code called Hooliganism, which envisages up to five years imprisonment as a penalty, spokesman for the Moscow Department of the Russian Interior Ministry said.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) Moscow police opened on Wednesday criminal proceedings against football players Pavel Mamaev and Alexander Kokorin over a brawl incident under Article 231 of the Criminal Code called Hooliganism, which envisages up to five years imprisonment as a penalty, spokesman for the Moscow Department of the Russian Interior Ministry said.

On Monday, Russian media reported that Mamaev and Kokorin had attacked two Russian Trade and Industry Ministry officials in a cafe in Moscow. One of the officials received head injuries. Later media reported about one more brawl incident involving Mamaev and Kokorin, which resulted in hospitalization of a driver of popular Russian tv host Olga Ushakova.

"The proceedings were opened under the Article 213 of the Russian Criminal Code [Hooliganism]," Yuri Titov said.

Both players have already come to investigators for questioning. Mamaev was detained following the questioning.

The football clubs of the two players, Krasnodar and Zenit, condemned the actions of Mamaev and Kokorin on Tuesday. Krasnodar also suspended Mamaev from training and announced its intention to terminate the contract with him.
