The League of Arab States (LAS) will convene an urgent meeting on Thursday to discuss the recent escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the organization Diab al-Louh said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas demanded that the Palestinian mission request a LAS urgent meeting to discuss the situation in Gaza.
"The meeting must result in practical decisions that would be commensurate with the level of aggression and crimes committed by the Israelis," al-Louh, who also serves as Palestinian ambassador to Egypt, wrote on Facebook.
The latest surge of violence in Gaza erupted on Monday after a Hamas commander was killed in a covert Israeli operation. Since then, Gaza militants have fired at least 460 rockets at Israel, and Israeli forces have carried out airstrikes on 160 targets in Gaza. At least seven Palestinians and one Israeli were killed, while dozens were injured as a result of the renewed tensions. On Tuesday evening, the sides returned to a truce, completing the most intense fire exchange in the past four years.
