Ireland, UK May Submit Joint Bid for Hosting 2030 FIFA World Cup - Reports

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 04th September, 2018) Ireland and the United Kingdom may submit a joint bid for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup, local media reported.

England's Football Association (FA) is currently considering submitting the bid for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The decision has not been made yet but last week UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin welcomed the idea to hold the world cup in the United Kingdom.

According to the Daily Mail newspaper, FA has not sent an official request to Ireland's football association but such an option is being considered now.

The joint bid may solve the problem of the lack of sports venues suitable for the World Cup in Northern Ireland as Dublin has two such stadiums: the Aviva Stadium and Croke Park.

One of the problems the UK bid may face is that the country has a total of four national teams - England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - and UEFA is likely to refuse to automatically provide four (or even five in case of a joint bid with Ireland) out of 16 places reserved for Europe in the tournament.
