Algerian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra will hold talks on Tuesday morning with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) Algerian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra will hold talks on Tuesday morning with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday that during the visit Russia hopes to hear "firsthand" about the country's political situation, after the announcement by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika that the country's elections that were set to be held on April 18 would be postponed.
On March 11, Bouteflika made a surprise announcement, saying he would not seek a fifth term in office, and proposed to set up "a national conference," which is expected to oversee the transition, draft Algeria's new constitution and set the date for new elections.
As a result of the announcement by Bouteflika, protesters gathered in Algiers on Friday to demand immediate political change from Bouteflika. Anti-government protests first began on February 22.
A source in the government of Algeria told Sputnik on Monday that after Lamamra's official visit to Moscow, he will travel to Brussels to meet with representatives of the European Union.
