Russian mine clearance specialists have demined over 32 hectares (almost 80 acres) of jungle in the province of Bolikhamsai, located in the middle of Laos, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 28th November, 2018) Russian mine clearance specialists have demined over 32 hectares (almost 80 acres) of jungle in the province of Bolikhamsai, located in the middle of Laos, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

"Since the beginning of demining operations in forests in the Khamket district of the Bolikhamsai province, over 32 hectares of land have been cleared of explosives," the ministry said.

The Russian mine clearance specialists began their mission in Laos, which is expected to last for five months, on October 15. It is focused on clearing myriads of hard-to-find US bombs that pose a threat to local residents.

The United States dropped some 260 million cluster bombs on Laos between 1964 and 1973, at the height of the Vietnam War, according to experts.
