MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2021) Sotheby's selling exhibition in Moscow will present rare works of art which have never been showcased before, Sotheby's Russia Senior Director Irina Stepanova told Sputnik on Wednesday.
The first selling exhibition of Sotheby's auction house in Russia will run from September 23 till October 1, and will feature 16 pieces of Russian art on the premises of the IN ARTIBUS foundation.
"We were trying to find real masterpieces in private collections, being guided by the intention to show pieces unfamiliar to the general collector, that have not been showcased anywhere. The difficulty was finding pieces in private collections that have never been presented at exhibits and never been sold before. We wanted to demonstrate all the diversity of auctions and categories we specialize in so old-school artists, Russian vanguard, Russian 19th century art, impressionists, and surrealists will be presented at this exhibition," Stepanova said.
"The painting 'Lago Maggiore' by Fyodor Matveyev is a real masterpiece, done in the 1920s. 'Lago Maggiore' is a very rare painting, so we placed it together with old-school artists... I also want to highlight 'Still Life With Red Vase' by David Shterenberg, representing the Russian vanguard of the 20th century. I also think a piece by Zinaida Serebriakova called 'Lying Nude on the Blue Pillow' is outstanding," Stepanova shared.
The total value of all the pieces to be exhibited is estimated at 4 million euro ($4.69 million). Attendees will have the chance to purchase the items showcased.
On July 7, 1988, Sotheby's held an auction entitled "Russian Avant-Garde and Soviet Contemporary Art" in Moscow. It was the first international art auction to take place in the USSR.
