MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) Spain's prosecution refused on Friday to back a probe into how the leader of the conservative opposition People's Party obtained his master's degree, local media reported.
Pablo Casado became embroiled this year in a growing scandal over academic degrees after several politicians were accused of doing nothing to earn them.
A judge in Madrid suggested that Casado was gifted his master's in law by King Juan Carlos University without taking many exams. She referred his case to the top court in August, which asked the prosecution whether it should proceed with the probe.
Sources with the prosecution reportedly told El Pais newspaper that the probe had not been given the green light. Its decision is not binding but is often taken into account. If the Supreme Court decides to go ahead with the investigation Casado will be invited to testify voluntarily.
