Trump Lawsuit to Block Oversight Cmte. Subpoena Has 'No Valid Legal Basis' - Congressman

The lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump and his team to block a subpoena by congressional Democrats that seeks to obtain the his financial records has no valid legal basis and contains inaccurate information, House of Representatives Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said in a press release on Monday

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd April, 2019) The lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump and his team to block a subpoena by congressional Democrats that seeks to obtain the his financial records has no valid legal basis and contains inaccurate information, House of Representatives Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said in a press release on Monday.

"The President has a long history of trying to use baseless lawsuits to attack his adversaries, but there is simply no valid legal basis to interfere with this duly authorized subpoena from Congress," Cummings said. "This complaint reads more like political talking points than a reasoned legal brief, and it contains a litany of inaccurate information."

Cummings accused the White House of unprecedented stonewalling in refusing to provide even a single document to the Oversight Committee this year.

Earlier on Monday, court filings revealed that Trump's lawyers have argued that the subpoena is invalid and unenforceable because it has no legislative purpose, and it investigates events that occurred when Trump was not president.

On April 12, Cummings issued a subpoena to the accounting firm Mazars USP LLP in order to obtain Trump's private financial records to see whether he committed any illegal activity before becoming US president.

The congressman from Maryland said his concerns were raised when Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen testified before the Judiciary Committee alleging that the president had altered the estimated value of his assets and liabilities in his financial statement.
