UNHCR Says Almost 1,500 Civilians Killed, Injured In Yemen In August-October

About 1,500 civilians were either killed or injured in Yemen during intensified fighting between August and October, UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) spokesperson Shabia Mantoo said at a briefing in Geneva on Friday.

GENEVA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) About 1,500 civilians were either killed or injured in Yemen during intensified fighting between August and October, UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) spokesperson Shabia Mantoo said at a briefing in Geneva on Friday.

"According to data published in the latest Civilian Impact Monitoring Report (CIMP), an estimated 670 incidents of armed violence resulted in 1,478 civilian casualties during a three month period. Of this total, thirty-three per cent were women and children, of which 217 were killed and 268 injured," Mantoo said, specifying that the data covered the period from August to October.

The casualties were in particular caused by the intensification of hostilities in Yemen, as well as by incidents that led to mass casualties.

According to the UN, a total of 65,000 people were injured and killed during the conflict in Yemen, including 16,000 civilians.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebels for several years. The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.
