State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert does not have enough diplomatic experience or qualifications to take up the job of US ambassador to the United Nations, Senator Mazie Hirono said in an interview on Friday.
President Donald Trump announced earlier in the day at the White House that he has selected Nauert to replace outgoing US envoy to UN Nikki Haley.
When asked during a CNN interview whether she would support Nauert's nomination, the senator said, "I would have difficulty because there are those of us that care about people's experience and qualifications.
"
The senator added that loyalty to the president should not be the main reason for being selected for the job.
While announcing his decision, Trump praised Nauert for her work with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. He characterized the spokeswoman as "very talented, very smart, and very quick" and a person who would be respected by all.
Prior to being appointed to her position at the State Department, Nauert worked as a corespondent for ABC News and a news presenter on a Fox News show.
