LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Mar, 2017 ) : Five-time defending champions, the University of Central Punjab, will meet Government College University Lahore in the final of the National Inter University Championship after winning their respective semi-finals at the National Hockey Stadium, here on Friday.
In the first semi-final, the University of Central Punjab defeated Punjab University 2-0. Both the goals came in the first half. Ghazanfar Ali (5') and Wajahat Ali (28') scored through open play.
It was an entertaining match. The Punjab University did well in patches but the UCP dominated most of the time. The encounter between Government College University Lahore and Superior University saw a more closely fought battle.
The two well matched sides played attacking brand of hockey: pole to pole stuff with a number of circle penetrations, penalty corners and chances. The two goal-keepers Asad (GCU) and Waleed (Superior), a national team standby, were in great form and refused to be beaten.
It ended goal less after 60 minutes, and shoot-out ensued. Finally, GCU Lahore prevailed. The Government College University Lahore has produced a number of hockey greats in the past, dating back to the United India days. But they face a very formidable opponent in the University of Central Punjab in the final on Saturday.
