The private US aerospace company Space X sent a payload of ten Iridium communications satellites hurdling toward orbit with the first launch of the New Year for the company's Falcon 9 rocket on Friday, according to a webcast that appeared to show a flawless liftoff from Vandenberg Air Force Base in the US state of California
"These new satellites are replacing the company's existing global constellation in one of the largest technology upgrades ever completed in space," Iridium said in a press release. "It represents the evolution of critical communications infrastructure that governments and organizations worldwide rely upon."
The payload marked the eighth and final launch for Iridium on the Falcon 9. If successful, the launch will complete a network of 75 new satellites that will provide global voice and data links.
