MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th August, 2018) A final decision on the construction of Russian helicopter carriers has not been made so far, and the matter remains open, a high-level source in the shipbuilding industry told Sputnik on Monday.

Earlier in the day, media reported, citing Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov, that helicopter carries, as they are typically understood, would not be built by Russia.

"The is no final position of the [Russian] Defense Ministry on the issue, the matter is still open," the source said.

In June, Russian Navy Deputy Commander Viktor Bursuk said that the design and manufacturing process for Russian amphibious assault ships (helicopter carriers) would start after 2020, after the design of a new large landing craft was completed.
