An official UN group of the world's Least Developed Countries (LDCs) has called on Australia to respect its international commitments after Canberra said it would no longer contribute to a global climate fund, media reported on Wednesday.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) An official UN group of the world's Least Developed Countries (LDCs) has called on Australia to respect its international commitments after Canberra said it would no longer contribute to a global climate fund, media reported on Wednesday.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday that the country would not "tip money" into the climate fund, referring to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The fund was set up within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to assist developing countries in adapting to impacts of climate change.
"Funding from wealthy nations such as Australia is key to enabling an effective global response.
LDCs and other developing countries have made ambitious plans, but these plans cannot be implemented without sufficient tools and resources being mobilized. The Green Climate Fund plays an integral role in delivering these funds and continues to be under-resourced," Ethiopian Gebru Jember Endalew, the chair of the LDC Group, said in a statement to Guardian Australia.
The LDCs is a group of 47 nations that are particularly vulnerable to impacts of climate change. Together these countries comprise over 880 million people, which is about 12 percent of world population, but account for less than 2 percent of world GDP.
