"As a precaution, I have directed State Police to increase patrols around mosques and houses of worship across the state," Cuomo said.

The governor offered his condolences to New Zealand and the victims' families, and reaffirmed New York's support for the Muslim community in the wake of violence stemming from Islamophobia.

Earlier on Friday, a gunman opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The country's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the shooting a terrorist attack. At least 49 people have been killed, and more than 30 others injured, according to police.
