The parties to the Yemen conflict on Friday have reached an agreement to open the road, which links the country's capital of Sanaa with the port city of Al Hudaydah and the city of Taizz, closed due to military activities, media reported.
According to the Al Arabiya broadcaster, the opening of the so-called eastern road is expected to take place on Saturday morning. It will be preceded by a discussion on details on Friday with the involvement of the UN-chaired joint coordination committee comprising representatives of the Yemeni authorities and the Shiite Houthi movement, officially known as the Ansar Allah. The road is expected to be used for the delivery of humanitarian food aid.
The parties are also planning to discuss the Houthi withdrawal from Al Hudaydah, as mentioned in the Sweden deal.
Last week, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a 30-day deployment of a United Nations team to Yemen to help monitor the ceasefire in Al Hudaydah that was agreed upon by the warring parties during the UN-led consultations in Sweden earlier in December.
Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebels. The Saudi-led coalition has undertaken military operations against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.
